We were approached in 2006 by Mr. Wilson who is connected to our family on his mother's side. His goal is to use a unique marker they call S21 to identify which of our participants might be of the Earl of Caithness lines. S21 originates in Freisland and Norway. His project already has many Sinclairs in it who show the marker. Now, as it turns out, our project has some as well.

Our approach was to test one participant from our lineages at the time we were contacted (Lineages 1-5) to see if one from each was of the S21 marker. If one in a lineage is, then all in that lineage are of the same marker.

What it means and doesn't yet mean

Without careful verification of documents research of those tested from the Shetland and Orkney, we cannot say that showing the S21 marker means you are of the Earl's line. However, we can say that it means you connect with many other Sinclairs already tested by EthnoAncestry from the Shetlands and Orkney. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
