UPDATE BY ROB - One thing regarding the naming traditions of Alexander's family. We have always assumed that Wayman was the oldest, but John may be the eldest. I think that this idea is supported, as John is the first to acquire land on his own, whereas Wayman splits a plantation with his brother Robert. The purpose of Alexander's land transactions seem to have been to provide each of his children with a plantation. Also, it is important that we do not rule out Amos Sinclair as a son of Alexander. While the belief is that he was from Maryland, his land was relatively close to Wayman and Robert's land.

The naming of scottish children often followed a set pattern. This was a custom established, we believe, to honor the grandfathers and grandmothers on each side of the family.

The first son born would be named after the father's father.

The first daughter born would be named after the mother's mother.

The second son born would be named after the father's grandfather.

The second daughter born would be named after the mother's grandmother.

Here are the children and their children -

Alexander's children
John
Wayman
Robert
Mary
Margaret
Patience
Elizabeth
Sarah
Amos (?)

If Alexander followed strict scottish naming tradition, then we know his father's name was Wayman. His grandfather was John.
His son's choices of names may provide a clue as well.

Two or three names are very interesting. Of course, this Wayman, though note that Robert doesn't pick it up.

To Wayman, Alexander is an important name, as is Isaac and Robert. He puts thm right up front. Mary is also a very important name to Wayman, his first daughter. Followed by Elizabeth. Neither son picks up the name Margaret, but both pick up Mary.

For Robert, Elizabeth and Isaac are important. John and Mary also important. Note, Robert never uses the name Alexander.

I'm particularly interested in the names Isaac, Elizabeth and Mary. Robert also bears further research. I think we can consider that the name Wayman could be a very important other family to our Alexander. But not a family name. I'm more interested in the name Isaac than Wayman.

Isaac, in particular, is important to both sons. Perhaps this is Alexander's father's name. Or an important other family to our Alex. I will do a search of Isaac's in the lists of ships passengers I have, perhaps an Isaac _____ moved to Virginia area about the same time.
